POLYNESIAN CLUB PAYS TRIBUTE TO PAST SAMOAN LEADERS
Celebrating the lives of two of its most influential past community members, the Oceanside High School Polynesian Club hosted its annual Wally Molifua Day Friday, including a special tribute to Junior Seau, who passed away earlier in the week. Both Molifua and Seau proudly relied on their Samoan American heritage, and used it to benefit students and the Oceanside Community.
Molifua, known to many as simply “Uncle Wally,” was a widely popular former OHS teacher and coach. He coached Seau during his tenure at the school. His influence led to the formation of the school’s Polynesian Club in the mid-to-late 1970s. Friday’s activities included a moment of silence for Seau, Polynesian dance performances, and the awarding of scholarships to four OHS seniors who will graduate in June.
Junior's public memorial celebration was held on 5-11-12 at the Qualcomm Stadium. Donations in Junior’s honor can be mailed to the Junior Seau Foundation at: Junior Seau Foundation, 5275 Market Street, Suite B, San Diego, CA 92114. Donations also can be made online at: www.juniorseau.org.

“Thriller” Performance Aims to Inspire Thrilling Test Results at Oceanside High
Busting out their best Michael Jackson dance moves, Oceanside High School staff members performed a surprise version of the King of Pop’s “Thriller” (click for video) dance routine Monday to help inspire students to do their best on this year’s California Standardized Tests (CST). The unexpected lunch time performance was met with rousing approval from students and staff. Local radio station Jammin’ Z90 was on hand to lend support.
OHS kicks off its annual testing Tuesday and is looking to pump up its current Academic Performance Index (API) score of 746. CST exams are used to help gauge a school’s API. The API benchmark for all schools statewide is 800.

Architectural Firm Chosen to Design OHS Performing Arts Center
The local design firm of Harley Ellis Devereaux has been selected as the architect for the future Oceanside High School Performing Arts Center. The OUSD Board of Education unanimously selected the firm during its regularly scheduled meeting on February, 14.
According to its proposal for the $17 million project, the designers stated: “Our goal and ambition is to provide Oceanside with a warm, vibrant and inviting landmark which is a true gateway to Oceanside High School and to the city surrounding it.”
A design jury, consisting of a number of professionals with “heavy theatre building experience,” recommended the winning firm to the board from a panel of five finalists. Board members voted 5-0 to accept the recommendation. The project should take two to three years to design and build.
